A Brief History of Malm
Malm fireplaces were born in California in 1959, designed by Herb and Helen Malm as a sculptural alternative to the traditional masonry hearth. The floating cone silhouette — suspended from the ceiling, hovering above the floor — was radical for its time and became a defining symbol of mid-century modern interiors.
Over six decades later, Malm remains one of the few original MCM fireplace brands still manufactured in the United States. Every unit is made to order in Santa Rosa, California, with the same cone geometry that made the original famous.

Fire Drum Series — The Drum Fireplace
The Fire Drum is Malm's second iconic form: a cylindrical drum suspended from the ceiling, available in gas only. Where the Zircon is angular and dramatic, the Fire Drum is softer and more sculptural — equally at home in a living room or a boutique hotel lobby.

Note: Malm gas models use B-vent venting, which requires a vertical flue run. Confirm your ceiling height and roof clearance before specifying a gas model.

What to Know Before You Order
- Lead times: Standard Malm units ship in 8–14 weeks. In-stock models (noted above) ship significantly faster.
- Flue pipe: The ceiling flue is a required component — Malm chimney flue pipe is available separately in 12" and 24" sections with 45° and 90° elbows.
- Ceiling height: Malm cones require adequate ceiling height for proper suspension and draft. Minimum 8 ft is typical; taller ceilings produce better draw.
- Replacement glass: If you're purchasing a used Malm or need a repair, ceramic glass panel replacements are available.
